Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
John 15:15

Service and love go together like peanut butter and jelly. To serve without love makes the servant like unto a hireling. His eye will be on an easier job, a more profitable wage, and a better master. Where there is service with love, there is only one Master whom we desire, one field in which to serve, and our treasures are laid up in heaven. To know the Lord and to love Him are the greatest motivations for service in all the world.

  1. II Timothy 4:10 and II Corinthians 13:13

    1. Servants speak of responsibility, and friends speak of relationships.

      1. Do we have to do things for the Savior?

      2. Do we get to do things for our Savior?

  1. Luke 8:38

    1. Servants are paid for their labor, but friends are passionate about their labor.

      1. Are we in it for what we can get out of it?

      2. Are we in it for what He had done for us?

  1. II Corinthians 5:14-15

    1. Servants know little of the master’s private life, but friends know a lot about the master’s private life.

      1. Are we on our feet, running here and there, and grumbling about so much to do?

      2. Are we sitting at His feet, gleaning from His words?

  1. Luke 10:38-42

    1. Servants are waiting on their next orders while friends are seeking for another opportunity.

      1. For some, service can become mechanical.

      2. For others, service must remain personal.

  1. Matthew 20:1-16

    1. Servants will follow a list, while friends will follow their Lord.

      1. It’s not about what we have done at the end of the day.

      2. It’s about who we have followed at the end of the day that counts.

  1. Philippians 1:20-21

    1. Many in the Bible were called servants, and many referred to themselves as servants.

      1. Service is important, but it must be done with passion for the Savior.

The Holy Spirit sums it up well in I Thessalonians 1:3, “Remembering

without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love…”
