5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
II Timothy 1:5
You can

’t help but see in this verse the two people who were so influential in Timothy’s life: a grandmother, Lois, and mother, Eunice. While it is evident that Timothy was brought to faith through the ministry of the Apostle Paul, the foundation was truly laid by these two important women in his life. Two generations, grandmother and mother, poured into Timothy vital and eternal truths which they themselves had come to believe. It had become their prayer and mission that he, too, would embrace these life-changing promises and believe that Christ died for sinners and was raised for their justification.
Timothy’s mother and grandmother were living in a time in history when the gospel was not popular, and many who were found to embrace it were persecuted or even martyred for their faith. In spite of all the danger that might arise because of faith in Christ, they knew it was the most important thing in all the world that Timothy be saved. One day, that little boy would depart this world, one way or another, and step out into eternity, and at all costs, it was a mother’s purpose (and grandmother’s) that he would be with Jesus.
Paul’s writing, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, honored these two amazing women. I believe we could say that Paul was saying, “Mom and grandmother, job well done”!
Today, you may not be able to tell your mother how much her godly influence has meant to you in your life, but you can thank God for her this Mother’s Day. For us who are still blessed to have our mothers with us, thank her today for how her faith in the eternal things of God was instilled in our hearts in those crucial years of life.
Timothy went on to be a great godly man by the grace of God and through faith in Christ, yet I can’t help but believe that on many occasions he thanked God for his mother and grandmother.
Many in the past and in this present day owe a great debt of gratitude to and for our mothers!
