And Asa cried unto the LORD his God: and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
II Chronicles 14:11
Asa was Judah’s fourth king and was said to have done “what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God” (vs 2). During his reign, the King of Ethiopia came up against him with a much greater army, and was seeking to take his kingdom (vs 9). Asa met this king on the battlefield, and before the battle started, his first weapon of choice was prayer! He had a great army of soldiers, but he had a much greater God. Asa’s prayer saved the day, changed history, and glorified his God! What made his prayer so special? Let’s see…

Asa had a great problem, therefore, he “cried unto the Lord”. When we place our problems into the hands of God, we are setting the stage for a great testimony! God can handle our problems. Also, I notice three times he refers to a personal connection to God in this prayer. He prays “unto the Lord his God”, then, “O Lord our God”, and, “O Lord, thou art our God”. Before the problem ever came up, he knew who God was, who was Lord of his life, and on Whom he could depend. He acknowledged that their problem was more than he could handle, but that his God could handle the problem. He knew that this was something that had to be done, and that he had to be a part of it. He trusted that as he walked out into the conflict, “his Lord and God” would walk before him. He states in his prayer, “we rest on thee”.
I’m thankful that we who have believed the gospel and know Jesus Christ as our Savior, now have faith and assurance that God is with us, and we can trust that He will never leave us or forsake us, but will enter into our problems and conflicts in life and rewrite our history and receive glory to His name.
Prayer should be the weapon of choice for all that know God.
