1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalm 1:1-3

Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God…”. These four words are the most profound and powerful words that could have been written to introduce the Bible. They capture our attention and lead us into a strong desire to better understand God. These words do not disappoint us as we continue on in the greatest Book that has ever been given to mankind.

book

So it is in the book of Psalms. There are 150 chapters in this book, making it the longest

book in the Bible. This book contains 43,743 total words! The first four words are, “Blessed is the man”. With this incredible introduction to the book, it should create a longing in the believer’s heart to know how to become and remain a blessed man! In the first three verses, the Holy Spirit, using only 81 words, gives great enlightenment on the basics and benefits of being a blessed person.

In vs 1, He tells us what we should not do if we are to be a blessed person: he is not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly, he is not to stand in the way of sinners, nor to sit in the seat of the scornful. Notice the direction in the person’s life that will lead him away from blessedness. He is walking, standing, and sitting! This is the picture of life spiraling out of control and becoming lower in spiritual standards. We must have a heart for truth, for sinners, and for humility if we are going to be raised up to a life of blessedness. So how does one get there?

Vs 2, by a heart that is truly satisfied and happy through knowing the Lord. His love for the Lord has put a love in his heart for His Word. He studies the Word of the Lord, and meditates on His words. His words bring him closer to the Lord and help him to develop more into the person whom his soul loveth.

Vs 3, this blessed person rejoiced in the place where the Lord “planted” him, and provided “water” for him. He rejoices in what he can do because of the Lord: “bringeth forth his fruit”. And what his Lord is doing for him: “his leaf also shall not whither”. And what joy it brings to him in knowing that what he does for the One whom he desires, “shall prosper”.

The blessed person is one who is different from the world’s people, (vs 1). The blessed person is one who delights in God’s Word (vs 2). And the blessed person is one who is dedicated to God’s work, (vs 3). This is the foundation on which the blessed start with, stay with, are satisfied with, and are never sorry for.

The greatest blessing in all the world is to know the Greatest Blesser over all the earth.
