Is there anything where of it may be said, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Ecclesiastes 1:10

The Book of Ecclesiastes is written mostly to show the reasoning of a people who do not know God. They are spiritually blinded, and can only perceive things from a natural perspective.

In chapter one, the author says it is useless to work and to try to have anything, because we will one day die, and it would be of no benefit to us. He continues saying the sun comes up, and goes back down. He remarks that the wind blows in a circle, and rivers flow into the seas. He declares that a person can never be satisfied, and another generation will arise to fight the same old cycle.

The assumption is that life is no more than a cycle of events that never change, cannot be broken, and life is worthless and we live in a hopeless world.

But is that how a believer looks at life? Is this the perspective of a spiritual man? No!

In the last chapter, Ecclesiastes 12, verses 13-14 say, Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Colossians 3:9-10, Lie not one to another, seeing ye have put off the old man with his deeds and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.

If you believe that life is just an endless cycle of events with no purpose and void of hope, I would recommend that this new year, you would look to Christ, confess your sins and let Him make you a new person. Your eyes will be open, and your perspective of life will be different.

Let our Lord make a new you for a new year!
